EventsMarch 27, 2009 International Prosecutions Panel and Book SigningThe Fairmont Hotel Washington From 9-10:30 a.m., ICTJ Prosecutions Program director Marieke Wierda will be speaking on a panel entitled "The Impact of International Criminal Proceedings on National Prosecutions in Mass Atrocity Cases," at the American Society of International Law's annual meeting in Washington, DC. The panel will discuss the need for increased coordination and cooperation between national and international courts addressing mass atrocity. It will draw lessons from attempts in the Balkans and Africa to give national courts a more active role in trying international crimes and reducing the "accountability gap." At 3:30 p.m., there will be a book signing of the newly released Prosecuting Heads of State, co-edited by Ellen Lutz and ICTJ Prosecutions Program Deputy Director Caitlin Reiger. The book explores the meteoric rise in trials of senior government leaders in recent years, as well as the motivations, public dramas and intrigues that have accompanied efforts to bring them to justice.
