ICTJ and Memory at Work Workshop: The War as Memorial and Monument

Lebanon is forced to remember the war through the bullet-holed walls and concrete remains visible throughout the country, yet there has been no conscious attempt to construct a national memory through the use of physical public space. Whilst widespread, memorials in Lebanon have until now been community specific, and although memorialisation provides an opportunity to challenge and to cross community boundaries, it has generally been missed.
