Transitional Justice Essentials Course in New York
The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), in partnership with New York University's School of Law, is pleased to announce the New York City-based Essentials Course: a 3-day on site intensive, non-credit course on transitional justice.
This seminar will be held at the Greentree Estate, formally the Whitney family home for nearly one hundred years. The Greentree Estate is an exclusive venue with 400 acres of rolling hills, gardens and woodlands on the outskirts of New York City. It is used by the United Nations Secretary General and various UN agency heads for retreats and high-level meetings.
TOPICS
The course covers essential themes, mechanisms, and case studies in the field of transitional justice. The course will focus on a range of topics include prosecution mechanisms, truth commissions, reparations programs, vetting mechanisms, and reconciliation initiatives. It also explores the intersection between efforts to achieve justice and accountability, and negotiations to ensure sustainable peace.
OBJECTIVE
The overall aim of the course is to equip busy professionals with the knowledge required to conceive and implement transitional justice policies and programs in line with international best practices. The program is primarily targeted at mid-level and senior staff of multilateral agencies, governments, NGOs, foundations, and universities who wish to undertake an intensive course on cutting-edge developments in this important and expanding field
DATES, LOCATION & COST
The course will be held from May 21-23, 2007.
This course will be taught in English.
The cost is $1250 US dollars, payable within 15 business days following admission. Included in the course fee are the following:
1. Accommodation for 2 nights and three days in the exclusively set and scenically beautiful Greentree Estate equipped with spacious individual living quarters, state of the art conference and computer rooms, libraries and reading spaces as well as a fitness center and swimming pool. 2. All meals including daily refreshments and an opening cocktail and reception dinner.
3. Transportation to and from the Estate
4. All course materials.
INSTRUCTORS
The primary instructor for the course is Paul van Zyl, Executive Vice President at the ICTJ and Adjunct Professor of Law at New York University and Columbia University. Paul van Zyl has acted as an adviser and consultant to human rights organizations, governments, international organizations, and foundations on transitional justice issues in numerous countries. From 1995 to 1998, he served as executive secretary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, helping to establish the Commission and develop its structure and modus operandi.
Other senior ICTJ staff such as Hanny Megally (Director of the Middle East & North Africa Program), Louis Bickford (Director of the Civil Society & Policy Makers Unit), Graeme Simpson (Director of the Country Programs Unit), Eduardo Gonzalez (Senior Associate) and Ana Patel (Research Project Manager) will also teach part of the course.
Graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion.
MATERIALS
Prior to commencement, applicants will receive a resource packet including a course reader and a CD-ROM of extensive core readings and materials on transitional justice.
TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION
Although the ICTJ does not cover participants' travel, visa, accommodation, or insurance costs, it will provide letters in support of participants' visa applications. Accommodation arrangements as well as travel to and from the venue will be organized by ICTJ.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications are due no later than April 23, 2007. Decisions will be communicated by April 27, 2007. The course is limited to a maximum of 30 participants.
