Mr. Justin Balegamire

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Mr. Justin Balegamire (Democratic Republic of the Congo) graduated from the Teachers' Training College in Bukavu, DRC, with a degree in Applied Pedagogy (biology option). He was a secondary school teacher from 1988 to 1995. During that time he co-founded the GEAPO, a branch of the Exchange Center for Democracy and Development and was a member of the Civil Society coordinating the South Kivu office. In 1995, Mr. Balegamire co-founded and served as the legal representative for The Basis of the Observatory for the Republic, an NGO involved in the human rights, social integration, and environment sectors. In 1999, he became a member of the Association of Biologists of Congo (DRC). Currently, Mr. Balegamire is working as a teacher at the Medical Techniques College in Bukavu.

Mr. Shupikayi Chimhini

Zimbabwe

Mr. Shupikayi Chimhini (Zimbabwe) is a lawyer with the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum. He has been involved in interviewing victims of organized violence, instituting legal proceedings, and doing advocacy work on behalf of victims of organized violence.

Ms. Valnora Edwin

Sierra Leone

Ms. Valnora Edwin (Sierra Leone) is a graduate of Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone, and of the Institute of Public Administration and Management, University of Sierra Leone. She is the Human Rights Officer at Campaign for Good Governance, where she monitors the documentation of human rights abuses and violations throughout Sierra Leone and coordinates the activities of field officers and field monitors across the 12 districts and in the Western Area. She supervised the documentation of testimonies for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Special Court in Sierra Leone. Ms. Edwin has collaborated with Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Campaign Against Violence Events, Forum for Democratic Initiatives, and Defense for Children. She presents a weekly human rights program on the national FM 99.9 Radio.

Mr. Sidonio Freitas

Timor-Leste

Mr. Sidonio Freitas (Timor-Leste) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Master's in Theology from the Seminary of Don Bosco Canlubang, Philippines, and Don Bosco Centre of Studies Paranaque, Manila, Philippines. Mr. Freitas worked at the International Republican Institute as a program coordinator for the development of political parties in Timor-Leste. He is currently working for USAID on the rule of law and free media program in Timor-Leste.

Mr. Than Htike

Burma

Mr. Than Htike (Burma) is a former general-secretary of the All Burma Students' Democratic Front. Currently, he is the supervisor of the Political Education Program and the Capacity Building Program of the Network for Democracy and Development. He is also the training organizer on Human Rights and Legal Training.

Ms. Marie Inamuganuro

Burundi

Ms. Marie Inamuganuro (Burundi) holds a degree in English language and literature. Since 1988, she has worked as a journalist, program producer, and broadcaster for the National Radio and Television Station. She is a member of the Executive Committees of Press House and the Burundi Women's NGOs Network.

Ms. Carine Kaneza

Burundi

Ms. Carine Kaneza (Burundi) holds a Bachelor's degree in Law. From 1998 to 1999, she worked at the law firm of Attorney Raphaël Gahungu and Attorney Jean Bosco Sindayigaya. She is currently in Cape Town, working on a Master's Degree in International and Human Rights Law. Previously, she was a legal consultant at the African Public Radio in Bujumbura.

Mr. Kyaw Lin

Burma

Mr. Kyaw Lin (Burma) was a senior high school student when he joined the student protests with the All Burma Basic Education Students' Union (ABBESU) and became an active member in his hometown. He participated in a series of anti-regime protests until the military violently seized power on September 18, 1988. After the suppression of pro-democracy activists, including many members of the ABBESU, he left Burma and joined the All Burma Students' Democratic Front to continue his political activities. He served as a radio communication officer for eight years. Since 2001 he has been the director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the All Burma Students' Democratic Front.

Ms. Eunice Mafundikwa

Zimbabwe

Ms. Eunice Mafundikwa (Zimbabwe) is a journalist with more than 10 years' experience working for national daily newspapers in Zimbabwe. In 1998, she became a senior political correspondent. More recently, she has been involved in lobbying and advocacy work on civil rights in Zimbabwe.

Dr. Wynoma Michaels

South Africa

Dr. Wynoma Michaels (South Africa) attended the University of the Western Cape and was awarded a PhD from the University of Stellenbosch. She was chairperson of the Student Representative Council at the University of Stellenbosch in 1999, where she was given a merit award for leadership. She is involved with issues such as transformation, leadership development, justice, reconciliation, and peace-building initiatives.

South Africa

Ms. Karabo Moloko (South Africa) is a student activist involved in reconciliation efforts.

Ms. Ingjin Naing

Burma

Ms. Ingjin Naing (Burma) is also a student activist in the All Burma Federation of Student Unions. She has worked at the Foreign Correspondent Club of Thailand and completed an internship at the Burma Fund in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Ijeoma Nwachukwu

Nigeria

Ms. Ijeoma Nwachukwu (Nigeria) pursued her studies in the Plateau State, Nigeria, and the United States. After obtaining her law degree from Abia State University in 1998, she worked as a judiciary correspondent for Channels Television and as a producer for a human rights law education program. Ms. Nwachukwu has also worked for the Civil Liberties Organisation, a Nigerian human rights NGO, and was charged with monitoring the proceedings of Nigeria's Human Rights Violations Investigations Commission. She is currently studying at Harvard Law School.

Mr. Franklin Oduro

Ghana

Mr. Franklin Oduro (Ghana) serves as the head of programs for the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), a nongovernmental organization based in Accra, Ghana. He manages the CDD's programs and projects, including those in transitional justice. Currently, Mr. Oduro is coordinating a program to promote civil participation in Ghana's national reconciliation exercise. He holds an MPhil. in Political Science from the University of Ghana.

Mr. Moses Chrispus Okello

Uganda

Mr. Moses Chrispus Okello (Uganda) is currently an African Graduate Fellow of International Human Rights Law, Forced Migration and Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo. His previous experience includes working as a refugee policy researcher for Makerere University in Uganda.

Mr. Sonny C. Onyegbula

Nigeria

Mr. Sonny C. Onyegbula (Nigeria) worked as a solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria from 1986. In 1997 he was awarded the British Chevening Scholarship to attend the University of Essex in England to study International Human Rights Law. He was awarded the Centre for Democracy and Development Research Fellowship to study the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission. His research led to the publication of a monograph entitled "Lessons from South Africa." The Centre subsequently appointed him as the coordinator for the Nigeria Office in 1999. He was also one of the coordinators for the public hearings of the Nigeria Truth Commission. He is currently engaged in doctoral studies on the effectiveness of the Nigeria Truth Commission from a comparative perspective.

Mr. Felix Ordartey-Wellington

Ghana

Mr. Felix Ordartey-Wellington (Ghana) graduated from the Ghana School of Law and became a barrister in 1998. He is a currently a barrister/solicitor and broadcast journalist. He is a member of the Ghana Bar Association, the Ghana Journalists Association and International Pen.

Ms. Agung Putri

Indonesia

Ms. Agung Putri (Indonesia) obtained her undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. She has been working for the Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy (ELSAM) since 1994. In 1995, she was appointed as coordinator of ELSAM's Human Rights Training and Education Division. She is currently the coordinator of ELSAM's Program on the Promotion of Settlement for Past Human Rights Violations.

Mr. Joseph Rahall

Sierra Leone

Mr. Joseph Rahall (Sierra Leone) is a human rights defender in Sierra Leone and currently the chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Forum for Human Rights, a federation of human rights organizations in the country. He is also the executive director of Green Scenery, an organization that advocates on issues related to the environment, human rights, leadership, and peace. He has also been involved with the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission and worked to ensure that the Lomé Peace Agreement incorporated a structure for accountability.

Ms. Sri Suparyati

Indonesia

Ms. Sri Suparyati (Indonesia) graduated from the University of Krisnadwipayana. She works with Kontras (Commission for Involuntary Disappearances and Victims of Violence). As a human rights advocate, she facilitates the interaction of victims and families with government institutions and handles cases until they are brought to court.

Mr. Nai Yeup

Burma

Mr. Nai Yeup (Burma), a social worker, works with the Mon National Democratic Front in Ye Township, Mon National Education School, under the Department of Education of New Mon State Party and the National Catholic Commission on Migration in Bangkok, Thailand. He is an executive member of the Mon Unity League (an umbrella political organization of Mon peoples of Burma and Thailand) and is responsible for the youth program. He has worked as assistant editor of a Mon newspaper and a magazine of overseas Mon students. He was a secretary of the Mon Literature and Cultural Committee at Mawlamyine University from 1992 to 1993.
