Job Description

ICTJ is currently seeking an intern to assist with its Syria Program. The intern will contribute to the program’s growing portfolio, which seeks to advance the rights of Syrians affected by conflict and contribute to achieving truth, justice, acknowledgment, reform, and sustainable peace. Selected candidates will work directly with the Special Coordinator for Syria and the New York-based Syria team to provide wide-ranging assistance to ongoing projects. The intern will gain valuable experience working as part of a small, dedicated country team. 

The ideal candidate will have excellent research and writing skills. The candidate will be a self-starter who excels at working independently, as this position has the potential to be based remotely. The intern will be familiar with the Syrian conflict and its evolution and will also have a solid understanding of transitional justice concepts. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English are required for the position. 

The internship will ideally be based in The Hague, Netherlands, but candidates who are able to work remotely from Beirut, Istanbul, or other places in the Middle East or Europe will also be considered. This is a part-time, unpaid internship. Students should check with their academic institution to see if they are eligible to receive academic credit for this internship 

Duties May Include:  

  • Assisting the Syria team by updating project documents in English and Arabic  
  • Research and some writing on Syria related issues, including detainees and the disappeared; housing, land and property; refugee rights; Syrian laws etc.  
  • Attending meetings (including online) with the Special Coordinator for Syria and preparing detailed minutes 
  • Assisting with the preparations for program activities, including events, workshops, and other activities that may be taking place
