About

Maine-Wabanaki REACH, the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission, United to End Genocide and the Immigration Legal Advocacy Project are combining efforts to offer a powerful opportunity for the people of Maine to learn, feel, think about and take action around issues of genocide: as it occurs abroad, as it has affected recent refugees, and as it has been waged against the first people of the State, the Wabanaki.

This event will feature Tom Andrews of United to End Genocide and a former US Congressman; Monique Mutumwinka, an asylum seeker from Rwanda; and Maria Girouard, Penobscot Historian and REACH Wellness Coordinator

The evening will include these speakers each delivering a TED-style presentation focused on the topics outlined above with musical and poetic interludes. A moderator will then invite questions and comments from the audience. The goal is not only to inform participants about genocide here and abroad, but to provide them with tools to take action. To that end, representatives from these and other organizations will be available after the presentations to help people determine how they can take specific steps to learn more; contribute time; donate; or otherwise participate in efforts to stop genocide and start on the path to healing.

Additionally, artist Robert Shetterly will display some of his portraits from the Americans Who Tell the Truth series and be available to speak with participants about his work.
