About

On Wednesday, October 29th, ICTJ President David Tolbert will join Carlos Castresana and Luis Moreno Ocampo for a roundtable discussion on transitional justice at the Instituto Cervantes, 211-215 E 49th St.

Transitional Justice is a relatively new branch of International Law, developed in the aftermath of the dictatorships and armed conflicts of the Cold War. An understanding of the difficulties faced by post conflict societies in holding perpetrators accountable for past abuses of human rights has helped the international community to assist those countries in building sustainable democracies in which controversies are solved peacefully through the rule of law. Various procedures such as reparations and guarantees of non-recurrence were developed to deal with the past and leave the conflicts and their violence behind.
