Burundi: Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls for Women and Girls to Share Their Experiences

Women and girls in Burundi have been invited to share their experiences with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR). The appeal was launched on March 8, 2019, in Bujumbura during a meeting about the rights of women and girls to commemorate International Women’s Day.

The meeting highlighted the effect of Burundi’s past crises on women and the need for the CVR to set up teams that take gender, ethnic, and age dimensions into consideration. There was a general belief that women will testify before the CVR if they are reassured of their protection and feel comfortable with their interviewers.

According to meeting participants, the public, specifically women and girls, are not sufficiently informed about the CVR mechanism and its missions. They recommended having more awareness sessions on the CVR and educating women about the Witness and Victim Protection Act to increase their participation in the transitional justice process.
