Prosecutors in Kosovo Guerrillas’ Trial Attempting ‘Ambush’: Lawyers

Defense lawyers of recently resigned Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and three other former guerrilla fighters turned politicians accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity argued at a status conference at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers on Thursday that the prosecution is trying to restrict the defense’s ability to prepare for the trial.

On Thursday, the prosecutors stated that they will submit a pre-trial brief that includes the evidence and legal arguments it plans to use in trial two to three months before the trial begins. “Even if the date of trial commencement changes, we will remain [in] our position on filing two to three months before trial,” prosecutor Alan Tieger added. The defense lawyers for Thaci and the co-accused Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi, claim that this would limit the defense’s ability to investigate and prepare its arguments against the prosecution’s evidence.
