Refugees Must Have Access to COVID-19 Vaccine: IOM


Refugees in the European Union (EU) should have equal access to promising COVID-19 vaccines, the head of the United Nations migration agency told the European Parliament on Thursday.

“It is for the sake of their safety and well-being of the entire host communities” in the countries taking them in, said Antonio Vitorino, director general of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Additionally, Vitorino also urge the EU to continue to reform its asylum and migration policy that has been put forward by the European commission. He argues that the coronavirus pandemic is driving migratory flows specifically in the Sahel region. “No one is safe until everybody is safe,” the IOM chief said.
