South Africa Revives Threat to Leave ICC, Using the Law’s Back Door


South African Justice Minister Michael Masutha recently brought Parliament up to speed on plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The government has been going back and forth on whether or not to withdraw from the ICC since 2015. The Justice Minister has been drafting another piece of legislation for Parliament to debate that would allow South Africa to abide by most international norms while withdrawing from its obligations under the ICC.
