Sudan Security Forces Arrest PM Abdalla Hamdok, Ministers

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and several other members of Sudan’s civilian leadership were arrested as military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan dissolved the transitional government. Hamdok’s arrest followed his refusal to issue a statement in support of the coup.

The arrests prompted thousands of protesters in the capital, Khartoum, to demand the release of the political leaders amid reports of clashes and gunfire. The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors reported at least 12 people were wounded in clashes.

Recently, Sudanese protesters had marched to back the full transfer of power to civilians in opposition to the push for “military” rule from others. Hamdok has previously described the splits in the interim government as the “worst and most dangerous crisis” facing Sudan’s transition.
