Talks Between Federal and Somali Region Authorities Underway After Weekend of Violence Leaves Trail of Causalities, Destruction


After a weekend of civil unrest in the Somali region of eastern Ethiopia that claimed at least 30 lives, regional and federal administrative, military, security, and intelligence authorities began talks to ease the crisis. With the dramatic political changes taking place in the country, residents of the Somali region, who for years have complained of abuse under regional authorities, have been pushing to rid themselves of regional leadership that many feel does not represent them.
