TRC for extending its tenure by one year

1/30/2017

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission today sought extension of its tenure by one year. A meeting of the commission held here took a decision to this effect.

The constitutional body was set up on 10 February 2015 with a two-year mandate to probe insurgency-era rights violation cases and recommend action against perpetrators and reparation for victims.

TRC said additional time was needed to complete the given assignments.

“We have decided to recommend to the government to extend the TRC’s term,” said TRC member Madhabi Bhatta. She said TRC itself had to recommend to the government to extend its term. Without TRC recommendation the government cannot take a decision on its term extension. “As per the constitution, the Cabinet can extend TRC’s tenure by one year. Only the Parliament can take a decision on further extension of the TRC’s tenure,” he added. TRC’s two-year term expires on February 9. The commission has to investigate more than 58,052 complaints of rights violation that allegedly took place during the decade-long Maoist insurgency.
