Unable to Grieve: Iraq’s Yazidis Trapped in Limbo as Mass Graves Left Untouched


Four years after the Islamic State (IS) ransacked Sinjar, many Yazidi families are still waiting for the Iraqi government to exhume the mass graves where thousands of people are believed to be buried. Since their town was liberated, the political dynamics in the region have changed considerably, leaving the community caught up in the rivalry between the Iraqi central government and the Kurds. As long as the sites are left exposed to the elements and to looters, crucial evidence of crimes committed by IS is being diminished day by day, and thousands of people are unable to know the truth about what happened to their family members.
