Development Officer, Foundation Relations

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is looking for a Development Officer, Foundation Relations to join our Development team.


ICTJ was created in 2001 as a specialized organization focused on helping societies reckoning with legacies of massive human rights abuses to prevent recurrence and increase prospects of sustainable peace.  A “think tank that does,” ICTJ has worked in over 50 countries. We inform the way practitioners and policymakers think about and practice transitional justice and build capacity of domestic civil society organizations and victims’ groups and authorities, helping them design and implement solutions that will work for them.  


The Development Officer, Foundation Relations will manage efforts to expand and diversify our growing pool of institutional donors and maintain high standards of donor relations across the portfolio.


Under the supervision of the ICTJ Director of Development (DOD), the Development Officer will:

Manage the foundations portfolio by:

  • Coordinating all grant cycle activities from cultivation to stewardship.
  • Working with program and finance/grant management staff to prepare proposals, reports and budgets.
  • Ensuring donor recognition.
  • Documenting interaction with donors and prospects.
  • Serving as a key point of contact for donors and prospects.
  • Coordinating engagement with relevant stakeholders at donor organizations.

Expand and diversify the foundations portfolio by:

  • Staying abreast of trends in philanthropy and, to a lesser degree, private sector.
  • Conducting prospect research.
  • Work with DoD and program leadership to create access to new prospects.
  • Manage all meeting preparation and follow up actions.

Support development of the annual plan for the institutional giving by providing evidence-based strategic inputs and financial projections.

Stay abreast of institutional goals, priorities and activities and lead coordination of internal meetings to support fundraising activities.

Collaborate with programmatic and communications colleagues to continue raising institutional brand recognition in the funding community.

Provide strategic insights in development and support for special events.

Other duties as assigned. 


Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. 

Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience with institutional philanthropy. 

Related Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of philanthropic trends and best practices in institutional philanthropy
  • Experience with direct engagement with foundations
  • Fluency in prospect research and knowledge of research tools to support prospecting strategy
  • Strong written and oral communications in English
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights
  • Flexibility and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Extraordinary attention to detail
  • Ability to manage group projects and meet deadlines

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and proficiency with fundraising databases (specifically Raisers Edge).
