Guterres Urges Support for The Middle East Amid Current ‘Turbulent Period’

Against the backdrop of the temporary ceasefire in Gaza, UN Secretary General António Guterres addressed the UN Security Council’s first quarterly debate on the Middle East for the year.  

The council debate also focused on the end of hostilities in Lebanon sparked by the war and the fall of the Assad regime in Syria. 

Mr. Guterres said that the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal offer hope. The UN leader underscored the importance of fully implementing the deal, stressing action on the ground, safe operating environments, aid access, and the opportunity for reunification.  

Turning to Lebanon, he asserted that Lebanese Armed Forces ought to be present in the totality of Lebanon. In regard to Syria, he said the UN is committed to working with both the Syrian people and the international community to support a credible and inclusive political transition.
