As President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has agreed to step down after 18 days of protests, ICTJ looks to how Egypt will begin transforming in terms of justice and accountability.

ICTJ Vice President for Programs Hanny Megally discusses what we can expect in the weeks and months to come. What happens in the next few days will be crucial in determining how quickly constitutional and legislative reform can happen.

Egypt will do will to look at the transitions that have happened, particularly in the Americas and in some countries in Asia and Africa. With these types of transitions, people work to ensure non-repetition, to establish law and order and to address past corruption, economic factors contributing to inequality and unrest, and human rights violations.

In addition to institutional and constitutional reform, mechanisms such as truth-seeking; consultations, particularly with groups that suffered the most; legal accountability; and access to reparation to promote enduring transition.
