Drone Strike in Sudan near the Border with Chad Kills 4, Injures Many More

Massive explosions caused by a drone strike at a market in the Darfur region near Sudan’s border with Chad killed four people and wounded over two dozen civilians, a medical group said. 
  
Doctors Without Borders, known as MSF, blamed the strike on the army, saying the drone hit fuel reserves at the Adikong border market in West Darfur, marking the second fatal drone strike in Adikong in less than a month. 
  

Press Freedom Declines in Americas, with U.S. Seeing Sharpest Drop: Report

A new report has expressed alarm at what it describes as backsliding press freedoms across the Americas, with the United States seeing the steepest decline. 
  
The Inter American Press Association released its latest press freedom index on Tuesday, ranking last year as the lowest point for freedom of expression since the report began in 2020. 
 
Researchers found that the Americas have experienced a “dramatic deterioration” in unrestricted speech, according to the report. 
  

Israel Launches New Wave of Attacks across Lebanon

Israeli forces have launched air strikes across Lebanon as Israel targets the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah during the Israeli-United States war on Iran. 
  
Two Israeli air attacks on Tuesday hit Lebanon’s southern city of Tyre, known as Sour in Arabic. This came shortly after the Israeli army issued a statement threatening attacks on Tyre and Sidon, also known as Saida, urging residents to “evacuate immediately and move at least 300 meters [about 1,000ft] away.” 
 

Israel Denies Women in Gaza ‘Conditions to Live’: Amnesty

Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip have been “denied the conditions needed to live and to give life safely” by Israel amid its genocidal war on the enclave, according to Amnesty International, a global rights group. 
  
Amnesty warned on Tuesday that women and girls in Gaza have been pushed “to the brink” as the Israeli war has spurred a series of hardships, from mass displacement to the destruction of the local health care system. 
 

Russian Attack Kills Four in Ukraine’s Sloviansk as Both Sides Claim Gains

Ukrainian and Russian officials have claimed battlefield successes in the more than four-year war, as Russian air attacks on Ukraine continue. 
  
At least four people were killed in Russian attacks on the Ukrainian town of Sloviansk, regional authorities said on Tuesday. 
 
The governor of Sloviansk, Vadym Filashkin, confirmed the death toll on Tuesday and said 16 others were wounded, including a 14-year-old girl. He said Russian forces dropped three guided bombs on the city. 
  

Madagascar's Leader Fires PM, Suspends Government

Madagascar's leader, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, has sacked his prime minister and dissolved the cabinet he appointed soon after seizing power following youth-led protests five months ago. The colonel appointed Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, from the private sector, as prime minister in October soon after a military power grab during protests that sent former president Andry Rajoelina fleeing. 
   

UN Peacekeepers Defy South Sudan Military’s Order to Leave Opposition-Held Town

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan said Monday that it would not comply with a government order to shut down its base in Akobo, an opposition stronghold near the Ethiopian border where tens of thousands of refugees have fled. 
  
On Friday, the South Sudanese army ordered UN peacekeepers as well as humanitarian organizations and civilians to vacate the town ahead of a planned assault.
