More Than 300 Children Killed or Injured in Sudan War in 6 Months, UNICEF Says

The war in Sudan has killed or wounded more than 300 children in the last six months, mostly from drone strikes, the UN children’s agency said Monday. 

The Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been fighting since April 2023. The war is now concentrated in the Kordofan, Darfur and Blue Nile states, with drone warfare causing 60 percent of casualties, according to UNICEF. 

Over 5,500 Children Displaced by Fighting in Sudan’s el-Obeid, Charity Says

More than 5,500 children have been newly displaced by fighting over the strategic Sudanese city of el-Obeid, and thousands more are at risk, Save the Children has warned. 

“As families arrive in displacement sites and into local communities, they face increasingly difficult living conditions,” the international charity said in a statement. “Many are struggling to access adequate shelter, clean water, healthcare and education services, while overcrowding is placing additional pressure on already limited resources.” 

Israeli Parliament Backs First Step Towards October 7 Inquiry

The Israeli parliament approved a bill in its first reading on Monday to establish a commission of inquiry into the security failings that led to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. 

The bill passed its first reading in the Knesset, Israel's 120-seat parliament, with 59 votes in favor and none against or abstaining. 

Opposition lawmakers, who want a different kind of commission not appointed by politicians, boycotted the vote. 

Mali Government Reports Rebel Attacks Targeting Northern Towns

The Malian army said Saturday that several northern towns, including Gao and Sévaré, were targeted by rebels. The statement came as a rebel group announced a new offensive to capture a northern town. 

Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), said in a Facebook post that the town of Anefis was being targeted by the separatists. 

Mohamed Cissé, a resident of Gao, told The Associated Press that the army is going door to door searching for attackers who are still in the city.

Australian federal police (AFP) investigators are assessing a brief detailing alleged war crimes committed by an Australian citizen serving in the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza. 

A 61-page brief has been handed to the AFP by the Australian Centre for International Justice detailing alleged war crimes committed by an IDF battalion in Gaza across 2023 and 2024. 

The allegations include the deliberate targeting and destruction of residential buildings without military justification, a war crime under Australian law. 

Conservative Candidate Keiko Fujimori Wins Peru’s Presidential Election in a Runoff

Conservative politician Keiko Fujimori on Friday was declared the winner of the presidential runoff election in Peru, which was dominated by people’s concerns over surging crime. 

Fujimori, 51, the daughter of a disgraced former president, was running for the presidency for the fourth time. She will be Peru’s ninth president in 10 years when she takes office later this month.
