ICTJ hosted a conference on “Strengthening Indigenous Rights through Truth Commissions” July 19-21, 2011. Regional and international experts convened to discuss how truth commissions can incorporate and address indigenous peoples’ rights. Day 1
The first day of the conference focused on “Truth Commissions and Indigenous Rights: What is at Stake?” Topics included: indigenous rights and truth-seeking in first colonization regions, truth commissions as a new approach to seeking justice in settler societies, and indigenous rights and truth-seeking in the face of post-colonial nation-building.
Day 2
The second day of the conference centered on “Reflections for Discussion on Indigenous Rights for Truth-Seeking.” Issues included truth commissions and indigenous rights to land and resources, truth commissions and the right to self-determination, and outreach and indigenous rights.
Day 3
The final day of the conference examined “Designing a Truth Commission to Support Indigenous Rights.” It focused on next steps, such as defining new principles and setting new standards for future truth-seeking initiatives.
