UN Agency Calls for Urgent Aid as Conflict Drives Refugees from DR Congo

Funding is desperately needed to feed a wave of refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to Burundi, the World Food Program (WFP) said. 

The United Nations agency warned on Monday that 70,000 people have fled across the border to neighboring Burundi since Rwanda-backed armed group M23 launched an offensive in January and seized large swaths of territory in eastern DRC. 

The influx has raised the total number of people dependent on food aid from WFP in Burundi to 120,000, the United Nations agency stated. 

Israeli Strikes in Southwestern Syria Kill 6 People as Troops Clash with Residents

An Israeli strike in southwestern Syria killed at least six people as Israeli troops occupying the area clashed with local residents, Syria’s Foreign Ministry and a war monitor reported. 

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said troops fired back at gunmen who attacked them, before launching a drone attack. 

The Syrian ministry said the six killed were civilians. 

Turkey Detains 1,100 Protesters and Several Journalists After Erdogan Rival Arrested

Police have detained more than 1,100 people, officials—including journalists—since the arrest of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival triggered some of Turkey's worst unrest in years. 

The demonstrations began in Istanbul after Ekrem Imamoglu's arrest last week and have since spread to more than 55 of Turkey's 81 provinces, sparking clashes with riot police and drawing international condemnation. 

The popular 53-year-old has been widely seen as the only politician who could defeat Turkey's longtime leader Erdogan at the ballot box. 

At Least Five Killed in RSF Shelling in Sudan’s Khartoum: Lawyers’ Group

Paramilitary shelling on a mosque in eastern Khartoum has killed at least five people and injured dozens, a Sudanese pro-democracy lawyers’ group has said. 

The attack, which has been blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeted civilians during evening tarawih prayers at a mosque in the East Nile district of Khartoum, said the Emergency Lawyers network, which has been documenting abuses by both the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces. 

Israel Attacks Southern Gaza’s Largest Hospital

An Israeli military attack on the largest hospital in southern Gaza killed two people, injured several, and sparked a large fire, according to the enclave’s Ministry of Health. 

The attack hit the surgical building of Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis, the ministry reported. The attack came just days after the facility was overwhelmed with the dead and wounded, as Israel resumed its war in Gaza with a surprise wave of air raids. 

Jailed Imamoglu Elected Turkish Opposition’s Presidential Candidate

Close to 15 million people voted for jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in a presidential primary organized by Turkiye’s main opposition CHP, municipal officials said. 

In a sign of growing national support, the party announced late on Monday that an estimated 1.7 million members were joined by 13 million non-party members in supporting Imamoglu to become its official candidate for the next presidential election, which is due to take place in 2028. 

US Airstrikes Targeting Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Kill at Least 2 People, Group Says

U.S. airstrikes targeting Yemen’s Houthi rebels pounded sites across the country, with the group saying one attack in the capital killed at least two people and wounded more than a dozen others. 

The American strikes on the rebels, who threaten maritime trade and Israel, entered their 10th day without any sign of stopping. They are part of a campaign by U.S. President Donald Trump targeting the rebel group while also trying to pressure Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor. 

Pakistani Security Forces Kill 16 Militants Attempting to Cross Border from Afghanistan

Pakistan’s security forces said 16 militants were killed on Sunday in a remote northwestern border area as they tried to cross the border with neighboring Afghanistan. 

A military statement said the “Khwarij,” a phrase the government uses for Pakistani Taliban, attempted to enter Pakistan from Ghulam Khan, a border town in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. 

Three People Killed in Russian Attacks on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Despite Truce Talks

Russia launched a drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, killing three people and wounded 14, Ukrainian officials said, despite agreeing to a limited ceasefire. 

Zaporizhzhia was hit by 12 drones, police said. Regional head Ivan Fedorov said that residential buildings, cars, and communal buildings were set on fire in the attack. Photos showed emergency services scouring the rubble for survivors.
