Tanzania Opposition Party Leader Tundu Lissu Charged with Treason

A court in Tanzania has charged opposition party leader Tundu Lissu with treason after his arrest at a public rally in which he called for electoral reforms. 

The charges against the chairman of the Chadema party will bring new scrutiny to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s bid for re-election in October as critics accuse the government of cracking down on the opposition. 

Rebels In Indonesia's Papua Say They Killed 17 People This Week

Rebels in Indonesia's Papua region said they have killed more than 17 people since the weekend, claiming that they were soldiers disguised as gold miners, and police said the insurgents were holding two hostages. 

A low-level but increasingly deadly battle for independence has simmered between security forces and rebels in resource-rich Papua ever since it was controversially brought under Indonesian control in a vote overseen by the United Nations in 1969. 

Indonesia Offers to Temporarily Shelter Wounded and Orphaned Palestinians from Gaza

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said that his country will offer temporary shelter to Palestinian medical evacuees and children orphaned by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. 

“We are ready to evacuate those who are injured or traumatized, and orphans, if they want to be evacuated to Indonesia, and we are ready to send planes to transport them,” Subianto said, adding that he has instructed his foreign affairs minister to discuss evacuation plans with the Palestinian authorities at once. 

At Least 35 Killed in Israeli Attack on Gaza Residential Block

At least 35 people have been killed and dozens of others were wounded in an Israeli attack on a residential block in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighborhood, medical sources told Al Jazeera. 

The Gaza Health Ministry said it expected the death toll from an attack in northern Gaza to rise, as civil defense teams and residents dug frantically to locate dozens of missing residents believed to be trapped under the rubble. 

Rising Populism Should Not Stop Discussions on Reparations, Says African Union Official

The rise of right-wing populism in Europe and elsewhere should not prevent Africa from bringing reparations for transatlantic slavery and colonialism to the table, the head of the African Union's diaspora division said. 

"There is no better time as this to discuss the issue of reparations as Africans ... irrespective of the various issues going on that may seem intimidating," the official, Angela Naa Afoley Odai, told Reuters in an interview.  

Door Still Open for Peace Process with Colombia's ELN, Peace Commissioner Says

Colombia remains open to dialogue with National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels despite their recent offensive in the country's east, peace commissioner Otty Patino said, as the Colombian government moves ahead with a separate process with some 300 fighters who split from the group. 

The government of President Gustavo Petro suspended peace talks with the ELN in January, after the rebels launched a series of attacks in the Catatumbo region, along the border with Venezuela, causing around 100 deaths and displacing some 56,000 people. 

UN Chief Says Palestinians in Gaza in ‘Death Loop’, Demands End to Blockade

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has spoken out about the dire humanitarian situation unfolding in the besieged Gaza Strip, saying “civilians are in an endless death loop” amid renewed Israeli bombardments and a ban on the entry of much-needed aid. 

Speaking to reporters, Guterres rejected a new Israeli proposal to control aid deliveries in Gaza, saying it risks “further controlling and callously limiting aid down to the last calorie and grain of flour”. 

UK Lawyers Accuse 10 Britons Who Fought for Israel in Gaza of War Crimes

A dossier against 10 British nationals accused of war crimes while they fought for Israel in the besieged and bombarded Gaza Strip has been filed to London’s Metropolitan Police by a leading human rights lawyer. 

The 240-page report, compiled by Michael Mansfield and other lawyers in The Hague, was submitted on Monday on behalf of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) and the British-based Public Interest Law Centre – which are representing Palestinians in Gaza and the United Kingdom. 

UN Mission Details Deadly Attacks in Haiti’s Capital and Questions Government’s Delayed Response

More than 260 people were killed during recent gang attacks on two communities in Haiti’s capital, according to a report by the U.N. political mission in Haiti that questioned the delay in the response by authorities.  

The report notes that during the first attack—in late January on Kenscoff, in the southern end of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince—it took Haiti’s military, police, and a UN-backed mission led by Kenyan police roughly five hours to respond.
