The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have signed a document key to advancing the peace process in the DRC's troubled east, ceasefire-broker Angola said on Monday. 

Since 2021 the Kigali-backed and largely ethnic Tutsi M23 rebel militia has seized swathes of the eastern DRC, displacing thousands and creating a humanitarian crisis.   

The top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday asked judges to grant an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s junta leader. Min Aung Hlaing is suspected of committing crimes against humanity through the deportation and persecution of the mainly Muslim Rohingya minority which accuse the military of mass killings and rape.  

Imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged his supporters to “fight till the end” as Pakistani authorities cracked down on protesters calling for his release. 

The United Nations' mission to Afghanistan said on Tuesday that the ruling Taliban had arbitrarily detained journalists 256 times since their takeover three years ago and urged authorities there to protect the media. 

In a reply accompanying the report, the Taliban-led foreign ministry denied having arrested that number of journalists and added that those arrested had committed a crime. 

A ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah has taken effect hours after United States President Joe Biden said a proposal to end the “devastating” conflict had been reached, promising to halt nearly 14 months of cross-border fighting that has killed thousands of people. 

Legislators in Nicaragua have approved a constitutional amendment that will strengthen the power of longtime President Daniel Ortega, who has been accused of cracking down on critics and political challengers. 

The reforms, which 79-year-old Ortega sent to Congress this week “as a matter of urgency,” were approved unanimously on Friday by 91 lawmakers. 

A key United Nations (UN) General Assembly committee adopted a resolution late Friday paving the way for negotiations on a first-ever treaty on preventing and punishing crimes against humanity after Russia dropped amendments that would have derailed the effort. 

Pakistan’s capital has been placed under a security lockdown to prevent supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from marching to Islamabad as part of the nationwide protests to seek his release.

Russia has a stock of powerful new missiles “ready to be used,” President Vladimir Putin has said, a day after his country fired a new ballistic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. 

In an unscheduled TV address, the Russian leader said the Oreshnik missile could not be intercepted and promised to carry out more tests, including in “combat conditions.”
