The administration of outgoing United States President Joe Biden has imposed sanctions on the head of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
In a statement on Thursday, January 16, the U.S. Treasury Department stated the SAF has committed lethal attacks on both civilians and infrastructure under al-Burhan’s leadership.
This statement comes just days after the Biden administration-imposed sanctions on Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces.
When asked about a recent briefing in Washington, DC, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters that the SAF continues to target civilians in the country.
Seeing the SAF as a group that continues to obstruct the advancement of peace processes through their refusal to participate in ceasefire talks.
