Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced the formation of a rival government, two years since the country descended into a brutal war that has left tens of thousands dead and triggered what the United Nations calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. 

Russia’s Putin Open to Ukraine Peace Deal: US Envoy

Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to a “permanent peace” deal with Ukraine, United States special envoy Steve Witkoff has said. 

President Donald Trump’s envoy made the claim in a TV interview late, following “compelling” talks with Putin in Saint Petersburg last week. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that agreeing terms on a deal is “not easy”, while Ukraine and its European allies have called on Washington not to be deceived by Moscow’s delay tactics regarding a ceasefire. 

Israeli Airstrike Hits Hospital Entrance in Gaza, Killing Medic and Wounding 9 Other People

An Israeli airstrike hit the northern gate of a field hospital in the Gaza Strip, killing a medic and wounding nine other people, a hospital spokesman said. 

The strike hit the Kuwaiti Field Hospital in the Muwasi area, where hundreds of thousands have sought shelter in sprawling tent camps. The wounded were all patients and medics, and two of the patients were in critical condition after the strike, said Saber Mohammed, a hospital spokesman. 

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. 

Russia Claims Its Deadly Attack on Ukraine’s Sumy Targeted Military Forces as Condemnation Grows

Russia claimed its deadly missile attack on Ukraine’s Sumy that killed and wounded scores including children had targeted a gathering of Ukrainian troops, while European leaders condemned the attack as a war crime. 

Ukrainian officials have said two ballistic missiles on Palm Sunday morning hit the heart of Sumy, a city about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Ukraine’s border with Russia, killing at least 34 people, including two children, and wounding 119. It was the second large-scale attack to claim civilian lives in Ukraine in just over a week. 

Sudan’s RSF Claims Control of Famine-Hit Zamzam Camp in Darfur

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has announced that it took control of famine-hit Zamzam camp in the western Darfur region, after two days of heavy shelling and gunfire there and in nearby areas that killed at least 100 people, including children and aid workers. 

The RSF said in a statement that it deployed “military units to secure civilians and humanitarian medical workers in Zamzam … after successfully liberating the camp entirely from the grip of” the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). 

Gabon's Leader Nguema Elected President With 90.35% Of Vote, Interior Minister Says

Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a coup in Gabon in August 2023, won the presidential election with 90.35% of votes cast, according to provisional results, the Central African country's interior minister said.  

The result cements Nguema's grip on power 19 months after the coup ended more than half a century of rule by the Bongo family in Gabon, an oil producer with a population of around 2.5 million. 

Tanzania’s Main Opposition Chadema Party Barred from Upcoming Elections

Tanzania’s electoral commission has barred the main opposition party, Chadema, from contesting presidential and parliamentary elections due to take place later this year. 

The Independent National Elections Commission (INEC) announced the decision on Saturday, stating that the party failed to sign a mandatory code of conduct agreement by the required deadline for the polls expected to take place in October.
