DR Congo and Rwanda to Sign Peace Agreement on June 27

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have initialed the text of an agreement aimed at stopping the conflict in eastern DRC, according to a joint statement from the two countries and the United States Department of State. The draft agreement contains provisions on issues including disarmament, the integration of non-state armed groups, and the return of refugees and internally displaced people.

India Illegally Deporting Muslim Citizens at Gunpoint to Bangladesh, Say Rights Groups

The Indian government has been accused of illegally deporting Indian Muslims to Bangladesh, prompting fears of an escalating campaign of persecution.Thousands of people, largely Muslims suspected of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, have been rounded up by police across India in recent weeks, according to human rights groups, with many of them deprived of due legal process and sent over the border to neighbouring Muslim-majority Bangladesh. 

AU and EU Hold Expert Seminar on Reparations and Transitional Justice in Africa

Abuja, June 19, 2025—The African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), in collaboration with the Consortium implementing the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA), led by the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and co-implemented by the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF) and the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), will host the fifth edition of the AU-EU Experts’ Seminar on Transitional Justice (TJ).

Brazil Auctions Off Several Amazon Oil Sites Despite Environmentalists and Indigenous Protests 

Brazil auctioned off several land and offshore potential oil sites near the Amazon River as it aims to expand production in untapped regions despite protests from environmental and Indigenous groups. The event came months before Brazil is to host the U.N.’s first climate talks held in the Amazon. The protesters outside Tuesday’s venue warned of potential risks that oil drilling poses to sensitive ecosystems and Indigenous communities in the Amazon. 

Human Rights Watch Issues Report on Forcible Transfer of Civilians by M23 Armed Group

The Rwandan-controlled M23 armed group has deported over 1,500 people from occupied eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to Rwanda in violation of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, Human Rights Watch said today. The Rwandan government and the M23 should immediately stop forced transfers of Congolese citizens and Rwandan refugees, which are war crimes.  

Israel Strikes Iran’s Nuclear Sites and Kills Top Generals. Iran Retaliates with Missile Barrages

Israel launched blistering attacks on the heart of Iran’s nuclear and military structure, deploying warplanes and drones previously smuggled into the country to assault key facilities and kill top generals and scientists.

Israel asserted the barrage was necessary before its adversary got any closer to building an atomic weapon, although experts and the U.S. government have assessed that Iran was not actively working on such a weapon before the strikes.

Kenyan Police Shoot Protester at Close Range During Latest Protests Over Blogger’s Death 

Kenyan police shot an apparent bystander at close range during the latest protests over the killing of a blogger in custody earlier this month, sparking more fury among the public and demands for accountability. An Associated Press journalist saw the officer, who had concealed his face with a mask, shoot the unarmed man at close range with what appeared to be a shotgun.

Gambians Break the Silence on Sexual Violence in ICTJ-Held Community Dialogues

From May 25 to June 1, 2025, ICTJ held a series of community dialogues in three rural regions of the Gambia on sexual and gender-based violence, including crimes committed during the Yahya Jammeh dictatorship. The dialogues brought together 122 individuals, including community leaders, victims, and young people, to share their experiences and discuss pathways for justice.
