ICC Appeals Judges Greenlight First in Absentia Hearing Over Ugandan Rebel Leader Kony

Appeals judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) gave a final greenlight Tuesday for the tribunal’s first in absentia hearing by allowing the next step in proceedings against notorious fugitive Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony. The Hague-based court has scheduled a so-called confirmation of charges hearing at which prosecutors will present evidence in September to back up charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against Kony, despite his whereabouts being unknown.  

A Landmark Court Decision Opens New Avenues for Accountability for Apartheid-Era Crimes in South Africa

On April 14, 2025, the Johannesburg High Court handed down a landmark judgment. From his bench in courtroom 4D, Judge Dario Dosio dismissed the defense team’s objections to the inclusion of murder and apartheid as crimes against humanity charges in the indictment against two individuals accused of a deadly 1982 attack on anti-apartheid student activists.  In so doing, the court cleared the way for crimes against humanity charges to be pursued in a South African domestic court for the first time. It also opened the door to the first ever prosecution of apartheid as a crime against humanity anywhere in the world.

Mexico’s electoral authority announced late in the night that 13 percent of Mexico’s 100 million voters cast ballots at the polls, lagging far behind the 60 percent turnout just a year before during the country’s presidential election. Nevertheless, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called the voting “a complete success.”

Bangladesh Ex-PM Hasina Charged with ‘Systematic Attack’ as Trial Opens

Fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina orchestrated a “systematic attack” on protests against her government, Bangladeshi prosecutors have said at the opening of her trial over last year’s deadly crackdown. “Upon scrutinizing the evidence, we reached the conclusion that it was a coordinated, widespread and systematic attack,” Mohammad Tajul Islam, chief prosecutor at Bangladesh’s domestic International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), told the court in his opening speech on June 1.

Six Killed as RSF Attack Devastates Sudanese Hospital in North Kordofan

At least six people have been killed in a suspected drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on a hospital in southern Sudan, the latest civilian facility targeted in the brutal civil war, officials and rights advocates have said.

The Emergency Lawyers, a rights group, blamed the RSF for the attack on Friday on the Obeid International Hospital, al-Dhaman, in Obeid, the capital city of North Kordofan province. At least 15 others were wounded in the attack, it said.

EU Says Israeli Strikes in Gaza 'Go Beyond What is Necessary' to Fight Hamas

The EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, has said that "Israeli strikes in Gaza go beyond what is necessary to fight Hamas" as the death toll there continues to mount. 

Kallas also said that the EU did not support a new aid distribution model backed by the US and Israel which bypasses the UN and other humanitarian organizations. 

"We don't support the privatization of the distribution of humanitarian aid. Humanitarian aid can not be weaponized", she said.
