Mali Political Activist Freed After Monthlong Abduction

A leading political activist whose family said that he was abducted by Mali’s military authorities has been released after a month in captivity, his relatives said. Alassane Abba, one of the leaders of the former political party Codem, was dropped off along a road in Mali’s capital, Bamako, Alhousseini Jannatta Alassane, his son, told The Associated Press. “No authority has confirmed their involvement, but we believe the intelligence services were behind the kidnapping,” he said.

Jailed Hong Kong Democracy Activist Joshua Wong Hit with New Charges

Jailed pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has been hit with further national security charges, a move rights groups said showed the Hong Kong government was trying to keep dissidents behind bars for as long as possible.  Wong, who has been in jail for more than four years either awaiting trial or serving sentences, is accused of conspiracy to collude with a foreign country. He appeared in court on Friday to hear the charge and did not apply for bail.

U.S. military strikes on the Ras Issa Port in Hodeidah, Yemen, on April 17, 2025, caused dozens of civilian casualties and significant damage to port infrastructure, Human Rights Watch said today. The attack should be investigated as a war crime.  

Three Salvadorian Ex-Military Convicted of 1982 Killings of Dutch Reporters

A former defense minister of El Salvador and two retired colonels have been convicted of the 1982 killings of four Dutch journalists during the country’s civil war, a lawyer for families of the deceased said. A five-member jury sentenced the defendants, now in their 80s or 90s, to 15 years in prison after an 11-hour session on the first day of the trial on Tuesday.

Tanzanian Lawmaker’s Church Shut Down After He Accuses Government of Human Rights Abuses

Tanzanian authorities deregistered a church owned by a ruling party lawmaker after he accused the government of human rights violations ahead of October elections. Parliament member Josephat Gwajima’s Glory of Christ church in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, was cordoned off by police Tuesday after hundreds of congregants turned up to protest the closure announcement.
