Envisioning Transitional Justice Approaches for Transformational Impact: The AU-EU Experts’ Seminar on Transitional Justice, Brussels, June 2024

This report summarizes the key issues discussed at the fourth African Union-European Union experts’ seminar on transitional justice. Convened by ICTJ in Brussels in June 2024, the seminar brought together experts from the two regions to share experiences and to explore how transitional justice processes can be designed and implemented to realize personal, societal, and institutional transformation as stated in the 2023 UN Secretary-General’s Guidance Note on Transitional Justice.

Mali’s Government Adopts Bill Granting Junta Leader 5 More Years in Power

Mali’s Council of Ministers on Wednesday adopted a controversial bill granting the head of the military junta an additional five years in power. General Assimi Goita has led the West African nation since orchestrating two coups in 2020 and 2021. The move follows the military regime’s dissolution of political parties in May, a decision made against a backdrop of burgeoning opposition.

UN Votes to Demand Gaza Ceasefire, Hostage Release and Aid Access

UN member nations voted overwhelmingly Thursday to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages held by Hamas, and unrestricted access for the delivery of desperately needed food to 2 million Palestinians.

The vote in the 193-member General Assembly was 149-12 with 19 abstentions. It was adopted with a burst of applause.

The resolution, drafted by Spain, “strongly condemns any use of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare.”

Brazil Braces For Bolsonaro’s Day in Court as Ex-President Testifies Over ‘Coup Plot’

Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, will finally find himself in the dock this week, accused of masterminding an armed far-right conspiracy to seize power after losing the 2022 presidential election. The 70-year-old paratrooper turned populist, who governed from 2019 until 2023, is scheduled to be interrogated by the supreme court as it seeks to untangle what federal police claim was a sprawling three-year plot to vandalize one of the world’s largest democracies.

Soldiers Return Home After Years in Captivity as Ukraine-Russia Prisoner Swap Begins

A new prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia has begun, officials in both countries said Monday, with Ukrainian soldiers who have spent nearly the entire duration of the war in captivity among those returning home. The exchange, agreed last week during talks in Turkey, involves detained people under the age of 25, as well as those who are seriously wounded, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Telegram. 

Conservative Colombian Senator in Serious Condition After Shooting at Political Rally 

Colombian Sen. Miguel Uribe Turbay, a conservative presidential hopeful, was in “serious” condition Sunday following surgery for a gunshot wound at a political rally a day earlier, Bogota’s mayor said. The attack took place in a park in the Fontibon neighborhood in Bogota when armed assailants shot him from behind, said the right-wing Democratic Center, which was the party of former president Uribe.

British Soldier Arrested in Kenya Over What UK Media Report Is a Rape Accusation

A member of Britain’s armed forces has been arrested in Kenya and U.K. military police are investigating, the Ministry of Defense said. The BBC and other British media reported that a British Army soldier was accused of rape. A U.K.-Kenya defense cooperation agreement allows thousands of British soldiers to train in the East African country each year. About 200 U.K. troops are based there permanently to train Kenyan soldiers.
