Argentina’s President Javier Milei to receive $1M Genesis Prize in Israel

Milei was awarded the $1 million Genesis Prize in January in recognition of his support of Israel.  

After he postponed a planned visit in March, he is now set to receive the prize in a ceremony at Israel’s Knesset on June 11 and deliver a speech to the Israeli parliament. 

Organizers say Milei will donate the prize money to launch an initiative aimed at improving diplomatic relations between Israel and Latin American countries and fighting antisemitism in the region. 

Colombia to Create Three Guerrilla Demobilization Zones

Colombia’s government and two FARC dissident groups agreed to create at least three temporary locations for guerrillas who wish to take part in demobilization, disarmament, and reintegration programs. 

The creation of the so-called Temporary Location Zones (ZUT) is the result of ongoing talks with the EMBF and the CNEB as part of the Total Peace policy of the government of President Gustavo Petro.

Uganda Targeting LGBTQ Community with Hatred and Violence: HRW

Uganda’s LGBTQ community is facing intensified persecution following the enactment of harsh anti-gay laws two years ago, according to an international NGO.

In a report released on Monday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Ugandan authorities have “perpetrated widespread discrimination and violence” and “spread misinformation and hatred against LGBT people” since the 2023 law was enacted.

Venezuela's ruling party is celebrating what it has described as "an overwhelming victory" in regional and parliamentary elections, which were boycotted by the majority of opposition parties. 

The electoral council (CNE), which is dominated by government loyalists, says candidates for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela's (PSUV) - President Nicolás Maduro's party - won the race for governor in 23 out of the country's 24 states. 

South Sudan Refugees in Ethiopia Face ‘Health Catastrophe’, Charity Warns

An international medical charity has warned of a looming “health catastrophe” among South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia, citing surging cholera cases and widespread malnutrition in overcrowded camps near the border. 

In a statement issued by Doctors Without Borders, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), said the local health system is overwhelmed and unable to cope with the needs of tens of thousands of new arrivals. 

Palestinian Health Minister Reports 29 ‘Starvation-Related’ Deaths in Gaza

At least 29 children and elderly people have died from “starvation-related” deaths in the Gaza Strip in recent days, the Palestinian health minister says, warning that thousands more are at risk as limited aid begins trickling into the bombarded enclave. 

 Majed Abu Ramadan told reporters that earlier comments by the United Nations aid chief to the BBC that 14,000 babies could die without desperately needed food aid were “very realistic,”, but could be an underestimation. 

Top Maoist Leader Killed as India Cracks Down on Rebels

A top Maoist leader has been killed fighting with Indian security forces in the central state of Chhattisgarh.

Nambala Keshava Rao, who is also known by several alias, including Basavaraju, was among 27 rebels killed, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said. One police officer was also reported to have died in the fighting. 

According to Shah, it is the first time in three decades that a Maoist of Rao's seniority had been killed by government forces.
