U.K. Signs Agreement to Hand Sovereignty of the Disputed Chagos Islands to Mauritius

Britain signed an agreement handing sovereignty over the contested and strategically located Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a move the government says ensures the future of a U.S.-U.K. military base that is vital to British security. 

The Indian Ocean archipelago is home to a strategically important naval and bomber base on the largest of the islands, Diego Garcia.

School Bus Attack Kills At Least Five in Pakistan

A bomb attack on a school bus in Pakistan's Balochistan region has killed at least five people and injured dozens. 

The bus was carrying around 40 school children when it exploded at about 07:40 local time just outside the remote town of Khuzdar, police told the BBC. 

Three of the five people killed are children, police said. Pictures circulating on social media show the charred wreckage of a large bus, with backpacks scattered around it.

The British government suspended free trade talks with Israel and hit West Bank settlers with sanctions, hours after vowing “concrete actions” if Israel didn’t stop its new military offensive in Gaza. 

Pressure from close allies is mounting on Israel following a nearly three-month blockade of supplies into Gaza that led to famine warnings. Even the United States, a staunch ally, has voiced concerns over the hunger crisis. 

First Few Aid Trucks Enter Gaza but Allies Threaten Israel with Sanctions and Urge More

The first few aid trucks entered Gaza following nearly three months of Israel’s blockade of food, medicine and other supplies, Israel and the United Nations said, as Israel acknowledged growing pressure from allies including the United States. 

Five trucks carrying baby food and other desperately needed aid entered the territory of over 2 million Palestinians via the Kerem Shalom crossing, according to the Israeli defense body in charge of coordinating aid to Gaza, COGAT. 

Syria Forms Transitional Justice, Missing Persons Commissions

Syria will set up commissions for justice and missing persons tasked with probing crimes committed during the rule of the Assad family, compensating victims, and finding thousands of people whose whereabouts remain unknown, the presidency said. 

Syria's grinding 13-year civil war has left hundreds of thousands of people, most of them civilians, dead and more than 100,000 people missing, according to United Nations estimates and human rights groups.
