‘A True Genocide’: RSF Kills ‘At Least 1,500 People’ in Sudan’s El-Fasher

Scores of people have been killed in attacks by the Rapid Support Forces during their recent capture of the city of el-Fasher in Sudan’s western Darfur region, according to a medical group and researchers.  

The RSF, which has been fighting Sudan’s military for control of the country, killed at least 1,500 people over the past three days as civilians tried to flee the besieged city, the Sudan Doctors Network said on Wednesday. The group, which tracks the country’s civil war, described the situation as “a true genocide.” 

Morocco Charges More Than 2,400 People Over Gen Z Protests

Morocco has charged more than 2,400 people over recent youth-led protests that turned violent, a sweeping response to some of the country’s largest anti-government demonstrations in years.  

Of the 2,480 charged, 1,473 people remain in custody awaiting trial. Charges included armed rebellion, insulting and using violence against a public official exercising his duties, and incitement to commit felonies.   

Myanmar Rebels Sign Ceasefire with Military After China-Mediated Talks

A major ethnic rebel group in Myanmar announced Wednesday it signed a cease-fire with the military following China-mediated talks, easing months of intense fighting in the country’s northeast near the Chinese border.   

The ceasefire with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, or TNLA, marks a significant victory for Myanmar’s military government, which has regained territories ahead of elections scheduled to start Dec. 28. Critics see the polls, which exclude the main opposition parties, as an attempt to legitimize and maintain the military’s rule.   

Brazil’s Ex-President Bolsonaro Appeals 27-Year Sentence for Attempted Coup

Lawyers for Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro have filed an appeal against his 27-year prison sentence handed down last month for a botched military coup after his 2022 election loss. 
  
The 85-page motion filed with the Supreme Court on Monday sought a review of parts of Bolsonaro’s conviction, including his sentence. 
  
Bolsonaro was convicted in September over his bid to prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from taking power following the 2022 vote. 
  

Pakistan Says Peace Talks With Afghanistan’s Taliban Government in Istanbul Failed After Four Days

Peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan have failed in Istanbul after four days of negotiations, Pakistan’s information minister said before dawn Wednesday, accusing the Taliban government in Kabul of refusing to act against militants blamed for deadly cross-border attacks.

The talks followed an earlier round in Doha that produced a ceasefire on Oct. 19 after deadly border clashes between the two sides left dozens dead, including soldiers, civilians and militants.

The United Nations has made an urgent call for the protection and safe passage of hundreds of thousands of civilians in Sudan’s el-Fasher as fighters from the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group have claimed to have seized control of the besieged city. 
  
UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher on Monday sounded the alarm amid reports of civilian casualties and forced displacement in the capital city of North Darfur state. 
 

Former Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina Stripped of Citizenship After Military Takeover

Former Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina has been stripped of his citizenship by after he was ousted during a military takeover just over a week ago. 
  
Rajoelina, whose whereabouts remains unknown after he fled the country following protests that demanded his resignation, also holds French citizenship. 
  
The country’s new prime minister, Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, has signed a decree invoking laws which strip all Madagascans of their citizenship if they have citizenship of another country. 
  

Kurdish PKK Announces It Is Withdrawing Fighters from Turkiye to Iraq

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party has said it is withdrawing all its forces from Turkiye to northern Iraq as part of a peace process with Turkiye, bringing an end to a months-long disarming process following a four-decade armed conflict that killed tens of thousands of people. 
  
“We are implementing the withdrawal of all our forces within Turkiye,” the Kurdish PKK said in a statement read out on Sunday in the Qandil area of northern Iraq, according to a journalist with the AFP news agency present at the ceremony. 
  

Israeli Strikes Kill Three in Lebanon Before Army Targets UN Patrol

Israeli strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon have killed three people, despite a ceasefire that began almost a year ago, the Lebanese Ministry of Health said. 
  
Lebanese authorities initially said that two people had been killed in Israeli attacks on Sunday but revised the death toll after a further strike. 
 
Two of the victims died in the country’s eastern Baalbek region, while the third was killed in Naqoura in the southern province of Tyre. 
  
The Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah members. 

Four Killed in Cameroon as Protests Intensify Ahead of Presidential Results

At least four people have been killed in Cameroon’s largest city, Douala, as police and opposition protesters clashed ahead of the announcement of presidential election results, according to the regional governor. 
  
The clashes on Sunday came after hundreds of supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma—who claims to have defeated President Paul Biya in recent elections—defied a protest ban and gathered in the streets of Douala.
