Home in Syria: A New Chapter for Justice and Reconciliation

ICTJ and its partners in the Bridges of Truth project presented in Damascus the findings from their recent report on the first community dialogues held in Syria since the fall of the al-Assad regime in December 2024. On October 7, victims and family members, civil society actors, representatives from the country’s nascent transitional justice commissions, government officials, and international partners gathered to reflect on the lessons learned from the dialogues and the path forward for truth, justice, and accountability in Syria. 

Thailand Threatens to Suspend Truce with Cambodia after a Land Mine Injures Troops 

Thailand threatened Monday to suspend a U.S.-brokered ceasefire with Cambodia after a land mine explosion along their volatile border injured four Thai soldiers. 
  
Thailand and Cambodia signed the truce agreement last month after territorial disputes between the Southeast Asian neighbors led to five days of combat in late July that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians. 
  
Tensions have simmered, and other land mine explosions before and after the clashes have also caused injuries. 
  

Israeli Drone Strike Kills Two in Gaza as Ceasefire Violations Mount

At least two people including a child have been killed in an Israeli drone strike east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to Al Jazeera reporters in the besieged Palestinian territory. 
  
Hamas condemned Israel’s “daily and continuous violations” since a truce came into effect last month, accusing it of maintaining a campaign of bombardments and demolitions across the besieged enclave. 
 

The Latest U.S. Strikes on Alleged Drug Boats Kill 6 in the Eastern Pacific

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Monday announced the latest in a series of strikes on boats accused of ferrying drugs, killing six people in attacks on two vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean. 
  
The dual strikes on Sunday bring the total number of known attacks up to 19 and the death toll to at least 75 people since the Trump administration launched a campaign against drug trafficking in South American waters that many see as a pressure tactic on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. 
  

Kenyan Activists Released from Ugandan Detention after Museveni Confirms Arrest

Two Kenyan activists were released from detention in Uganda after President Yoweri Museveni confirmed they were arrested more than a month ago and accused them of working with the opposition to unseat him in the January general election. 
  
Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo were taken by armed men on Oct. 1, shortly after attending a rally by Museveni’s most prominent challenger, the entertainer known as Bobi Wine. 
   

Israeli Attacks Kill 3 in Lebanon as EU Urges It to Respect the Ceasefire

Two brothers have been killed in an Israeli air raid on a vehicle between the southeastern Lebanese towns of Ain Ata and Shebaa, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), in the latest flagrant violation of a one-year-old ceasefire. 
  
In a separate attack on Saturday, an Israeli drone struck a car near Salah Ghandour Hospital in the southern town of Bint Jbeil, injuring seven people, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health Affairs said.  
 

Massive Russian Attack Damages Ukraine's Energy Network, Killing Several

A Russian drone slammed into a tower block in eastern Ukraine early Saturday while many were sleeping, killing three and injuring 12 people, Ukrainian authorities reported.  
  
The attack in Dnipro, Ukraine’s fourth-largest city, was part of a large Russian missile and drone barrage across the country that targeted power infrastructure and also killed a worker at an energy company in Kharkiv, farther north, a local official said.  
  

UN Sounds Alarm over Rising Hunger Crisis in Eastern DR Congo

The number of people facing emergency levels of hunger in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has nearly doubled since last year, the United Nations has warned. 
  
The UN’s World Food Program (WFP) said on Friday a “deepening hunger crisis” was unfolding in the region, but warned it was only able to reach a fraction of those in need due to acute funding shortages and access difficulties. 
 

Israel Ramps Up Lebanon Strikes as Hezbollah Vows to Defend Itself

At least one person has been killed and nine injured in a series of Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon, ratcheting up tensions and drawing condemnation from both the Lebanese government and the armed group Hezbollah as a flagrant violation of a one-year-old ceasefire. 
  
The Israeli military said that it targeted alleged Hezbollah military installations on Thursday, accusing the group of refusing to disarm in accordance with an agreement reached last year. 
 

RSF Says It Agrees to Mediators’ Ceasefire Proposal in Sudan War

The Rapid Support Forces says it has agreed to a proposal by the United States for a ceasefire in Sudan after more than two years of fighting with the Sudanese Armed Forces. 
  
The paramilitary group said in a statement on Thursday that it would accept a “humanitarian ceasefire” proposed by the U.S.-led “quad” mediator group, which includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, “to address the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the war and to enhance the protection of civilians”.
