Hamas and Israel Exchange Captives, Detainees before Gaza Summit

Hamas and Israel have carried out a prisoner exchange deal under a ceasefire agreement that saw the release of nearly 2,000 Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails and 20 Israeli captives held in the Gaza Strip. 

On Monday, television channels announced that the first lot of seven captives had been handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Israeli military later confirmed that 13 more captives taken from Israel during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023 were also transferred. 

Afghanistan Says It Has Killed 58 Pakistani Soldiers in Overnight Border Operations

Afghanistan said Sunday it killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in overnight border operations, in response to what it called repeated violations of its territory and airspace. Pakistan’s army gave far lower casualty figures, saying 23 troops were killed. 

Earlier in the week, Afghan authorities accused Pakistan of bombing the capital, Kabul, and a market in the country’s east. Pakistan did not claim responsibility for the assault. 

Intensive Israeli Air Strikes Kill One, Injure Seven in Southern Lebanon

Israeli air attacks on a southern Lebanese village have killed one person and wounded seven others, temporarily severing a key route connecting Beirut to the country’s south, in the latest near-daily violation by Israel of the November 2024 ceasefire it signed with Hezbollah. 

The strikes hit Msayleh village in the early hours of Saturday morning, targeting a site that sold heavy machinery and destroying numerous vehicles. 

Militia Strikes Kill at Least 60 in Sudan Displacement Camp, Says El Fasher Group

Militia drone and artillery strikes have killed at least 60 people at a displacement shelter in the besieged city of El Fasher in western Sudan, a local activist group has said. 

The resistance committee for El Fasher said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group hit the Dar al-Arqam displacement center, which is in the grounds of a university. 

It said in a later statement that the shelter had been hit twice by drones and eight times by artillery shells on Friday and Saturday. 

Ivory Coast Arrests 237 Protesters Amid Rising Tensions before Presidential Election

At least 237 people were arrested Saturday in Ivory Coast during a protest against what activists called the country’s authoritarian drift, according to a statement by the Minister of the Interior and Security on national television. 

Protesters reported the use of tear gas and makeshift roadblocks near the planned start of the march. 

Gaza City Residents Return as Israel Says Ceasefire Has Started

Palestinian families have begun returning to decimated Gaza City, as Israel continued deadly attacks on the enclave until the Israeli military said the first phase of the ceasefire deal went into effect at 12:00 pm (09:00 GMT). 

According to a military update on Friday, the Israeli army “positioned themselves in the latest deployment lines, in accordance with the outline of the ceasefire agreement”. The Israeli forces “in the Southern Command are deployed in the area and will continue to operate to eliminate any immediate threat”, it added.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her struggle to achieve a democratic transition in the South American nation, winning recognition as a woman “who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.”   

The former opposition presidential candidate is a “key, unifying figure” in the once deeply divided opposition to President Nicolás Maduro’s government, said Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee. 

Russian Strikes Wound at least 20 in Ukraine’s Capital as Child Is Killed in Separate Attack

Russian drone and missile strikes wounded at least 20 people in Kyiv, damaged residential buildings, and caused blackouts across swathes of Ukraine early Friday, authorities said. A child was also killed in separate attacks in the southeast of the country. 

In the heart of the Ukrainian capital, rescue crews pulled more than 20 people out of a 17-story apartment building as flames engulfed the sixth and seventh floors. Five people were hospitalized, while others received first aid at the scene, authorities said. 

Venezuela Asks UN Security Council for Emergency Session over U.S. Military Actions in the Caribbean

Venezuela’s government on Thursday requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council focused on the U.S. military actions in recent weeks in the waters off the South American country. 

Venezuela made the request in a letter addressed to Russia’s ambassador to the UN and council president, Vassily Nebenzia, that accused the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump of seeking to topple Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threatening “peace, security, and stability regionally and internationally.” 

Peru’s Congress Removes President Boluarte as a Crime Wave Grips the Country

Peru’s Congress voted early Friday to remove deeply unpopular President Dina Boluarte from office as a crime wave grips the South American nation and quickly replaced her with 38-year-old lawyer José Jerí, the legislative body’s leader. 

Lawmakers had set up a debate and impeachment trial late Thursday in the 130-member unicameral Congress after voting to accept four requests for a vote to remove Boluarte from office over what they said was her government’s inability to stem crime.
