Italy, Spain Send Navy Ships to Protect Gaza Flotilla after Drone Attacks

Spain and Italy have sent naval ships into the Mediterranean Sea, charged with protecting the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which is carrying aid towards Gaza.   

Italy said on Thursday that it is sending a second ship, while Spain said its navy will also act. Rome dispatched a frigate the previous day following a drone attack on the GSF in international waters after it came under drone attack en route to Gaza to deliver aid.

Human rights activists have voiced outrage after Rio de Janeiro’s parliament approved plans to pay police officers a “wild west bonus” for “neutralizing criminals” during operations.   

The move is a throwback to the mid-1990s when Rio’s then governor, Marcello Alencar, introduced similar legislation that caused an explosion of extrajudicial killings in the city’s favelas.

Israel Kills 85 People in Gaza Despite Calls for Truce from World Leaders

At least 12 Palestinians, among them seven women and two children, have been killed in a strike on a stadium sheltering displaced families in the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, as Israel pressed ahead with its relentless attacks despite calls for a ceasefire from world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly. 

The al-Ahli Stadium, which has been converted into a makeshift refuge for Palestinians fleeing the Israeli onslaught, became the site of another massacre on Wednesday. 

Yemen’s Houthis Launch Drone Attack on Israel’s Eilat, Wounding 22 People

Israel’s military says a drone launched from Yemen has struck the southern city of Eilat, and rescuers report that at least 22 people are wounded, including two in serious condition, as Israel conducts its genocidal war on Gaza. 

A military statement said the drone “fell in the area of Eilat” on the Red Sea coast on Wednesday after air defenses failed to intercept it. 

Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed responsibility for the attack. 

Houthis said they will stop their attacks when a ceasefire is agreed in Gaza. 

Military-Run Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso Announce Joint ICC Withdrawal

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, three nations in West Africa run by military governments after coups in recent years, have announced their exit from the International Criminal Court, referring to it as “neocolonial repression” and accusing the judicial body of selective justice. 

In a joint statement on Monday night, the three countries said the ICC had become incapable of prosecuting war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression, and genocide without elaborating.
