Calls for Probe after Killing of Civilians Reported in Northwest Pakistan

At least 24 people, including children, have been killed in explosions in a remote area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan, triggering calls for an investigation into the incident. 

A local police official said bomb-making material allegedly stored at a compound run by Pakistan Taliban, known by the acronym TTP, exploded in the Tirah Valley region early on Monday, killing fighters and civilians. 

Deadly Haiti Drone Attack Kills Eight Children in Capital Port-au-Prince

A deadly drone attack in an impoverished area of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, which killed at least 11 people, including eight children, is being blamed on the government, as the country’s use of the UAVs in its war on gangs comes under increasing scrutiny. 

The incident happened on Saturday night in Cite Soleil, one of Port-au-Prince’s most dangerous neighborhoods, in the city’s west along the coast, as Albert Steevenson, known as Djouma or “King Jouma”, who is a suspected gang leader, was celebrating his birthday. 

Crimes Against Humanity Charges Against Former Philippine President Duterte Detailed by Court

The crimes against humanity charges against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte allege his involvement in the killings of at least 76 people while he was president and earlier a southern mayor, the International Criminal Court has revealed.   

The redacted charges were made public Monday after prosecutors submitted a 15-page charge sheet to the court on July 4. Among other things, they allege Duterte instructed and authorized “violent acts including murder to be committed against alleged criminals, including alleged drug dealers and users.” 

France Among Six More Countries to Formally Recognize Palestinian Statehood

The leaders of six countries, including France, have moved to recognize Palestinian statehood at a high-level summit ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. 

Alongside France, which co-convened the meeting with Saudi Arabia on Monday in New York, Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco said they were recognizing a Palestinian state.   

Treason Trial Begins for South Sudan VP Machar as ‘Unity Government’ Breaks

South Sudan has started holding a trial for First Vice President Riek Machar, who has been sacked by his decades-long rival, President Salva Kiir, and charged with murder, treason, and crimes against humanity in relation to rebellion and an attack by a militia linked with ethnic tensions. 

Earlier this month, a decree read on state radio said Kiir suspended the first vice president due to charges stemming from his alleged involvement in attacks by the White Army against federal forces in March. 

Mass Grave Reveals Scale of Unlawful Killings by Egyptian Army in Sinai, Say Campaigners

Hundreds of bodies could have been buried at a mass grave discovered in Egypt’s Sinai province by human rights campaigners. 

Bodies were found at a burial site near a military outpost by the Sinai Foundation for Human Rights. 

The group discovered the mass graves while conducting research into disappearances and extrajudicial killings of civilians during a decade of conflict in the Sinai region between Egyptian security forces and Islamic State-aligned militants. 

South Sudan’s Suspended Vice President Appears in Court on Treason Charges

The criminal trial of South Sudan’s suspended vice president began in the capital Monday as Riek Machar appeared in a cage alongside his co-defendants. 

President Salva Kiir suspended Machar as his deputy earlier this month after justice authorities filed criminal charges for Machar’s alleged role in an attack on a garrison of government troops earlier this year. 

In addition to treason, Machar and seven others face charges of crimes against humanity, murder, conspiracy, terrorism, destruction of public property, and military assets.

Syria will elect a new People’s Assembly on October 5, the first parliament to be chosen since the fall of Bashar al-Assad late last year.

UK Recognizes Palestinian Statehood 108 Years After Balfour Declaration

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the United Kingdom’s decision to formally recognize a Palestinian state more than 100 years after the Balfour Declaration backed “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people,” and 77 years after the creation of Israel in the British Mandate of Palestine. 

“In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and of a two-state solution,” Starmer said in a video statement Sunday. 

Israeli Forces Kill 91 in Gaza, Including Civilians Fleeing Gaza City

Israeli forces have killed 91 Palestinians in Gaza in a single day, according to medics, including family members of a prominent doctor, and four people on board a truck fleeing northern Gaza City. 

The killings on Saturday came as Israeli forces continue to press on with their relentless air and ground assault to seize Gaza City, the largest urban center in the enclave, and force its population into concentration zones in the south.
