Pakistani Raids Near Afghan Border Kill at least 19 Soldiers, 35 Fighters

Pakistani security forces have raided three hideouts of the Pakistan Taliban armed group near the Afghan border in recent days, triggering fierce clashes that killed at least 19 soldiers and 45 fighters, says the military. 

The military on Saturday said 22 fighters were killed in Bajaur, a district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Thirteen more were killed in a separate operation in South Waziristan district, it added. 

UN General Assembly Votes for Hamas-Free Palestinian State

The UN General Assembly voted Friday to back a resolution which seeks to breathe new life into the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, without the involvement of Hamas.  

The text was adopted by 142 votes in favor, 10 against, including Israel and key ally the United States, and 12 abstentions. It clearly condemns Hamas and demands that it surrender its weapons 

Russia Says Ukraine Talks Paused as it Launches Major Drills with Belarus

Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are on hold, the Kremlin has announced, accusing European countries of obstructing negotiations, while United States President Donald Trump warns he may be running out of patience with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. 

The comments on Friday come as Moscow says it remains open to dialogue, while it escalates its bombardment on Ukrainian cities and fierce fighting rages in Donetsk in the east. 

Nepal Protest Death Toll Reaches 51 as 12,500 Prisoners Remain on the Run

At least 51 people have been killed during violent anticorruption protests in Nepal this week, and thousands of prisoners who escaped during the chaos remain on the run, according to police. 

Police spokesperson Binod Ghimire said on Friday that those killed so far this week included 21 protesters, nine prisoners, three police officers and 18 others, without elaborating. Another 1,300 people were injured as police fought to control crowds. 

Official Says Gangs Killed Dozens in Small Fishing Village in Haiti’s Latest Massacre

Dozens of people were killed in a fishing village north of Haiti’s capital in the latest massacre carried out by powerful gangs in the troubled Caribbean country, an official said Friday. 

At least 42 people were killed in Labodrie, including a 4-year-old child and his family, said Joseph Louis Baptiste, a local government official. 

Baptiste said gangs set Labodrie on fire and are now trying to attack the nearby town of Arcahaie, with police and a local vigilante group trying to hold them back. 

Military Airstrike on Schools in Western Myanmar Kills at least 18 People, Most of Them Students

An airstrike by Myanmar’s military on two private schools in a village in Myanmar has killed at least 18 people, most of them students, an armed group and local media reports said Friday. 

More than 20 others were injured in the nighttime attack on the Thayet Thapin village in Kyauktaw township, the area controlled by the ethnic Arakan Army in the western Rakhine state, they said.  

Khaing Thukha, a spokesperson for the Arakan Army, told The Associated Press that a jet fighter dropped two bombs on Pyinnyar Pan Khinn and A Myin Thit Private High Schools. 

UN Security Council Members Condemn Israel Over Deadly Strike on Qatar

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has condemned the Israeli attack on the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday and called for de-escalation in a statement agreed by all 15 members, including Israel’s chief ally, the United States. 

Council members issued the statement ahead of the emergency meeting on Thursday, which was convened to discuss Israel’s attacks targeting Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital, as it ramped up its offensive in Gaza City, forcing more than 200,000 to flee. 

Belarus Frees 52 Political Prisoners after U.S. Mediation

Belarus has released 52 prisoners following mediation by the United States, which has promised to grant Minsk sanctions relief. 

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said on Thursday that the prisoners, along with the U.S. delegation, had crossed into Lithuania. 

U.S. President Donald Trump had called on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to release detainees whom the U.S. leader has described as “hostages.” Belarus later confirmed their release. 

South Sudan Charges VP Machar with Treason, Murder Over Military Attack

Riek Machar, South Sudan’s first vice president, has been charged with murder, treason, and crimes against humanity.   

The charges stem from his alleged involvement in attacks by a militia against federal forces in March, the justice minister announced on Thursday. 

South Sudan’s government claims the White Army, a loose band of armed youths, attacked a military base in Nasir, northeastern South Sudan, and killed more than 250 soldiers on Machar’s orders. 

Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years for Plotting Military Coup in Brazil

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for plotting a military coup and seeking to “annihilate” the South American country’s democracy. 

Justices Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha and Cristiano Zanin ruled on Thursday that Bolsonaro was guilty of seeking to forcibly cling to power after losing the 2022 election.
