Israel Kills Over 50 in Gaza; Qatar Calls Israeli Attack ‘State Terror’

Israeli forces continued their bombardment of Gaza, killing more than 50 people on Tuesday. 

Among the dead are nine Palestinians, who had gathered in the enclave’s south seeking aid. Israel pressed on with its offensive in Gaza City after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened Palestinians to flee to the south for their lives. 

Israel Targets Hamas Leadership in Military Strikes on Qatar, Officials Say

Israel launched an airstrike against Hamas leaders in Qatar on Tuesday, expanding its military actions that have ranged across the Middle East to include the Gulf Arab state where the Palestinian Islamist group has long had its political base. 

Qatar, which has acted as a mediator alongside Egypt in talks on a ceasefire in the almost two-year-old war in Gaza, condemned the attack as "cowardly" and called it a flagrant violation of international law. 

At Least 21 Civilians Killed in Russian Attack in Eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk

A Russian glide bomb attack on a village near the frontline in eastern Ukraine has killed 21 civilians waiting to collect pension payments, Ukrainian officials say of the latest barrage from Moscow. 

Vadym Filashkin, governor of the eastern region of Donetsk, said 21 people were killed and 21 wounded on Tuesday in the village of Yarova.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike in Yarova, which lies in a region that has seen some of the war’s fiercest fighting recently. 

Death Toll from 2 Attacks by Islamic-State-Affiliated Rebels in Congo Climbs to 89

The death toll from two attacks on civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by an Islamic State-affiliated rebel group has risen to 89, Congolese authorities said. 

Officials said late Tuesday that 71 people were killed at a funeral in Nyoto on Monday, and 18 others were killed in Beni in a separate attack on Tuesday. Both attacks took place in the North Kivu region of the country. 

The attacks, carried out by the Allied Democratic Force, or ADF, were the latest in a series of mass attacks on civilians in the troubled region.  

Nepal Prime Minister Quits After Deaths at Protests Sparked by Social Media Ban

Nepal’s prime minister has resigned after some of the worst unrest in decades rocked the country this week, set off by a ban on social media and discontent at political corruption and nepotism. 

KP Sharma Oli’s resignation came a day after widespread protests were met with deadly force by police, leaving 19 dead and hundreds injured. The spark for the protests was a government ban on 26 prominent social media apps, but they escalated into a larger mass movement against corruption among political elites. 

In a New Documentary, an Intimate Portrayal of Colombians Affected by Conflict Sheds Light on the 2016 Peace Agreement

Vance Center for International Justice, and the New York City Bar Association, recently hosted a screening of the Colombian documentary Después del Frío ("After the Cold"). Coproduced by ICTJ and Colombian journalist María Jimena Duzán, with the support of the Embassies of Sweden and Norway in Colombia, the film paints an intimate portrait of a nation seeking healing and transformation, where the scars of the past give way to hope.  

Israeli Strikes Kill Five in Lebanon in Latest Ceasefire Breach

At least five people have been killed and five others wounded after Israeli warplanes struck eastern Lebanon in the latest violation of the ceasefire agreement signed last November, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. 

The attacks on Monday hit the Bekaa and Hermel districts, with state media saying at least eight air raids were carried out.  

Israel’s military claimed the raids hit weapons depots and military facilities used by Hezbollah, though the claims could not be independently confirmed. Hezbollah has not yet commented. 

Congo Army Accused of Opening Fire on Protesters and Killing at Least 3 People

Unarmed protesters in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who accused a military officer of supporting Rwanda-backed rebels became the targets of gunfire Monday that left at least three people dead, witnesses and the regional governor said. 

Witnesses belonging to a militia and a civil society group participating in the protest in the city of Uvira in South Kivu province said members of DRC’s military opened fire on the protesters and killed at least four of them and injured seven.
